IBM Escalates Computer Chip War, Stops Shipping Computers Using Pentium. (Originated from Akron Beacon Journal, Ohio)

AKRON, Ohio--Dec. 13--The computer chip war escalated yesterday as IBM announced that it has stopped shipping personal computers that use Intel Corp.'s Pentium because it believes the risk of mathematical errors is worse than previously disclosed.

IBM said the errors in the Pentium chip, a microprocessor that is essentially a PC's brain, occur more often in relatively normal spreadsheet calculations instead of only in the advanced mathematical calculations Intel described.

Some analysts said the decision was a marketing ploy designed to hurt Intel, which has sold an estimated 5 million Pentium chips, and boost sales of the Power PC, a chip IBM has designed with Motorola Inc.

Either way, IBM's action will test the loyalty of chip companies, PC makers...
