BUENA PARK, Calif.--Feb. 1--Nutrilite is to vitamins as Scotties is to Kleenex; or Curad to Band-Aid. Two competing and equivalent names, yet one is a household word, almost a generic term. A Kleenex, a Band-Aid, a vitamin.

Nutrilite and vitamin were words invented at the same time, by scientists identifying the compounds in food. Vitamin is now used as a generic term, but Nutrilite Products Inc. in Buena Park, Calif., is that close to the origin of the food-supplement business.

Its founder, Carl Rehnborg, was there at the beginning, in the 1920s, formulating ideas about what makes humans healthy. It is only an accident of history, or perhaps a marketing failure, that we call them Flintstones vitamins today instead of Flintstones nutrilites....
