Burlington Northern Rail Officials Alarmed at Indiana Whistle Proposal.(Originated from The News Tribune, Tacoma, Wash.)

TACOMA, Wash.--Mar. 10--Burlington Northern officials say they're alarmed by a state legislative proposal that would allow county officials to prevent train engineers from blowing whistles when approaching gated crossings.
Spokane County legislators, reacting to a noise problem in the urbanized Spokane Valley east of the city, are pushing the legislation.
The railroad believes that the new law would make things quieter at the expense of safety.
"You know how fast trains go in rural areas and the whistle's the only chance a train's got," BN's Seattle spokesman Gus Melonas said. "I've seen whistles save lives. A train can't swerve; it can't stop quickly."
