SAN JOSE, Calif.--Apr. 12--The supermarket strike at Northern California's Safeway, Lucky and Save Mart stores will be a week old tonight, and there is little reason to believe it will be resolved soon. Tuesday afternoon, both an independent mediator and a federal mediator called the two sides together for a meeting Thursday.

A Their last contract expired March 4 and was extended by both sides during bargaining talks. After a month of negotiations that yielded little progress, the United Food and Commercial Workers broke off talks April 2 and held strike votes among its members....
