Boeing to Receive Certification for New 777 Jetliner.(Originated from The News Tribune, Tacoma, Wash.)

Apr. 18--When federal and European regulators certify Boeing's new 777 jetliner Wednesday, handing Boeing the equivalent of the twin-jet's birth certificate, it brings a 6-year gestation to an end. It also produces Boeing's first all new jetliner in 13 years.

Boeing will be handed operating certificates by the Federal Aviation Administration and the Joint Airworthiness Authority. The certificates come 10 months after the 777's first test flight. Operating certificates are awarded after government agencies are satisfied that a new airplane meets federal or international safety standards are required before a plane can be used to carry commercial passengers.

United Airlines, which launched the 777 with an $8 billion order in 1989, plans to do just that...
