Mazda's Miata a Charming, Affordable Sports Car.(Originated from Detroit Free Press)

June 15--The Mazda Miata. Why does the world love this little sweetheart? Because it's the best affordable sports car on the planet. Indeed it's about the only affordable sports car on the planet.
The only other cars that fit the profile are the $26,000 Toyota MR2, which will disappear at the end of the 1995 model year, and, marginally, the Honda del Sol.
Perceptions vary widely on the definition of the term "sports car," particularly among carmakers, but I still find comfort in the old British description: a two-seater, usually a drophead (British for convertible), that's driven primarily for sport and, in a pinch, can be raced.
