Oregon Labor Commish Defends Incentives to Hyundai.(Originated from The Register-Guard, Eugene, Ore.)

Jun. 6--Did state and local leaders "give away the store" by offering $32 million in government subsidies to lure Hyundai's computer chip factory to west Eugene?
Not at all, says state Labor Commissioner Jack Roberts, the highest- ranking elected official to step forward and defend Hyundai's tax breaks and other government aid.
Hyundai's estimated $27 million in property tax relief is a sound investment, considering the 1,000 jobs the South Korean firm will create by making Lane County's biggest business investment ever, Roberts said Monday.
Today, the labor commissioner will stick up for Hyundai in a private speech before the Downtown Eugene Rotary club. The title of his address: "Economic Development - Are We Giving Away the Store?"
