ATLANTA--July 11--Negotiations between Delta Air Lines and its pilots over a new union contract enter a critical phase today as a federal mediator arrives to try to help narrow a canyon of differences.
Delta wants to wring a daunting $340 million a year from its 8,600 pilots, the final corner in its effort to cut $2 billion a year from expenses.
The Air Line Pilots Association, Delta's only major domestic union, says it will accept any or all of the following in return: stock, a board seat,
job protection and/or a commitment from Delta to a growth-oriented strategy such as adding cargo-only flights.
Union officials point out that other airlines, such as United and Northwest, have in recent contracts given their employees equity and board...
