TACOMA, Wash.--Jul. 14--Smith's Home Furnishings has paid $450,000 to settle a Washington Attorney General lawsuit accusing the chain of deceptive advertising and sales.
The Oregon company, which has Puget Sound area stores in Tacoma, Tukwila,
Lacey, Silverdale and Redmond, agreed Thursday that violations occurred and says it has taken steps to comply with state consumer protection laws.
A former Smith's employee told state investigators that the savings claimed in one kind of company advertisement -- offering savings of 30 to 50 percent on some merchandise -- "were made up out of thin air."
The settlment resolves a lawsuit filed by the AG's office in September 1993, after 50 to 75 consumers complained.
