Jul. 12--Dayton Hudson Corp. officials are working on a plan to unload Mervyn's if the current repositioning strategy doesn't take hold, according to Saul Yaari, a securities analyst with Piper Jaffray.

Although he did not hear of the plan from management, Yaari said he had a source, whose name he said he can't disclose, that told him that an "unbundling of assets is a possibility in early 1996."

"We believe that options relating to the future of the struggling Mervyn's are currently being evaluated with the intent to submit them no later than early 1996 for board considering," Yaari wrote in a July 10 report.

Dayton Hudson spokeswoman Gail Dorn repeated the company's policy that it does not "comment on speculation." But she also said that the...
