Taiwan Moves to Compete with U.S. Computer Chipmaker Intel.(Originated from San Jose Mercury News, Calif.)

Jul. 15--Will your next computer have Taiwan Inside? The Taiwanese government is scrambling to boost its domestic electronics industry by jointly developing microprocessors with Taiwanese chip makers to compete with market leader Intel Corp., according to a trade journal report.
Electronic Engineering Times, a trade journal in Manhasset, N.Y., reports in Monday's edition that the government will support the simultaneous development of two new generations of microprocessors, which serve as the brains of personal computers.
Taiwan will develop microprocessors that could match the performance of Intel Corp.'s own code-named P6 and P7 chips. The P6 is Intel's successor to the Pentium, which is expected to sell 35 million chips this year. P7 is the planned...
