Washington State Grocery Chain Warns of Rising Bread, Bakery Prices.(Originated from The News Tribune, Tacoma, Wash.)

TACOMA, Wash.--Sep. 1--Rising wheat and flour prices have prompted a local grocery chain to issue its first-ever "consumer alert." Top Food and Drug Co. warns that changing wheat and flour markets will push up retail prices of bread and bakery goods sometime this month.

In a written statement entitled "Consumer Alert: Wheat Prices Highest Since 1981," the company stated that while it couldn't specify the exact increase on each item, "Consumers will see prices increase on both commercial and scratch bakery goods in stores and bakeries throughout the country."

The company said poor worldwide wheat crops in 1993 and 1994, along with a wet spring in the Midwest, caused a shorter and lesser quality wheat crop this year.
