Sept. 26--If you ask people to identify the world's high-tech center, odds are they'll pick Silicon Valley, saying this region stands out because of its eye to the future and global markets. Harvard Business Professor Rosabeth Moss Kanter echoes that -- but not without issuing a warning to the valley's leaders, its companies, its employees and its residents.

As good as the valley is, it isn't perfect -- and competitors are chipping away at its dominance daily, says Kanter, who has written several books on managing change. Her latest is "World Class: Thriving Locally in the Global Economy" (Simon & Schuster, $25).
