HomeBase Makes Customer Service A Priority and Cleans Up Its Image.(Originated from The Orange County Register, Calif.)

IRVINE, Calif.--Oct. 3--Allan Sherman bought a one-way ticket to California when he was named president of HomeBase two years ago. Sherman, a 31-year retail veteran with a New Yorker's grit, was determined to stick it out at the ailing retail chain where seven presidents had come and gone in a decade and poor customer service threatened to wreck the company.

So far, Sherman, 51, hasn't gotten the itch to call his travel agent. Things also are on the mend at HomeBase.

Sherman moved quickly to restructure the company that had $1.4 billion in sales last year. He closed 18 stores and began remodeling the 79-store chain. He also hired more experienced staffers and added customer service features such as free in-home design consultations.
