U.S. Shifts Waste Jurisdiction on GE Site to Virginia.(Originated from Richmond Times-Dispatch, Va.)

Oct. 12--The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality plans to take a look at the severity of contamination at the former General Electric Co. complex on Staples Mill Road, which Continental Cablevision plans to lease.

Regulatory jurisdiction for the site recently changed hands from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to the DEQ.

The agency will review environmental information collected by parties involved in the deal and Continental's plans for the site.

If the site has run afoul of environmental regulations, DEQ could order a cleanup. If contamination is found to be less severe, DEQ may recommend corrective action or monitoring.
