Indianapolis-Based Sycamore Stores Inc. Files for Chapter 11.(Originated from The Indianapolis Star)

Dec. 9--Sycamore Stores Inc. on Friday filed for Chapter 11 protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Indianapolis.

The Indianapolis-based chain plans to close its 126 women's apparel shops and lay off nearly 650 employees within 10 weeks, according to documents filed with the court.

About 50 of the shops are in Indiana. Other store are in Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky.

The company is based in a 90,000-square-foot Northwestside office and distribution center at 6075 Lakeside Blvd.

Sycamore Stores disclosed assets of $9.1 million and liabilities of $10.7 million in its Chapter 11 filing. Chapter 11 allows a company to continue operating while it works out a plan to pay its debts.
