Virginia Senate Offers Cautious Support to Public School Computer Network.(Originated from Daily Press, Newport News, Va.)

FAIRFAX, Va.--Dec. 9--State Senate leaders offered cautious support Thursday for Gov. George Allen's $100 million plan to build a computer network linking Virginia's public schools and colleges.

Then they contemplated a state budget forecast that could leave Virginia with a two-year shortfall of $500 million or more unless taxes are raised or programs are cut.

At a two-day retreat to prepare for the 1996-98 budget that Allen will present this month, senators got another warning about the tight fiscal squeeze they face even as they push for major education initiatives.
