NEW YORK--Dec. 29--It's 11:30 a.m. two days before launch, and Lou Dobbs has already unbuttoned his collar and loosened his tie. He sits on a coffee table. Staffers huddle around the veteran CNN business journalist. "I want to see this thing hum today," says Dobbs, his arms crossed and both feet tapping. "Can you do it?"

This "thing" is CNNfn, Ted Turner's new financial news channel. Dobbs heads the 12-hour financial cable TV channel, which, as of today, is available in 5.5 million U.S. homes. In Atlanta, only Emory University receives the channel so far.

Today's launch represents the climax of a six-month press to get CNNfn on the air. For a month now, most of the senior managers have been working 14- hour days, seven days a week.
