WHITESVILLE, Ga.--Dec. 16--Chuck and Barbara Powell have forsaken traditional jobs to raise birds -- the long-legged, giraffe-necked variety that runs fast, has a powerful kick and speak with an Australian accent.
The couple bought one pair of emus in 1990 for $1,500. In 1992, they both quit good jobs in Columbus to become full-time emu ranchers in western Harris County.
He worked as a Georgia Department of Corrections special intelligence officer at Jack T. Rutledge Correctional Institution. She was a nursing administrative secretary at St. Francis Hospital.
Their daughter, Julie Lopez, left the U.S. Air Force with husband, Blane, to go into the business full-time.
