Semiconductor Manufacturers Mull University-Based Research Network.(Originated from San Jose Mercury News, Calif.)

Jan. 12--Semiconductor manufacturers are considering a new plan to establish a network of research and development centers at universities nationwide to offset a perceived shortfall in funding for crucial manufacturing technologies.

Jim Glaze, vice president of technology for the Semiconductor Industry Association, said this week that chip makers should establish the networks to develop manufacturing technologies that will be used in future generations of chips, which form the guts of electronic devices.

"More direct participation by the industry is imperative," he said. Glaze said the shortage of funding could be several hundred million dollars over the next few years. The funding gap will get worse in time as the federal government retreats from its role...
