Suitors Line Up to Buy Prodigy.(Originated from New York Daily News)

Jan. 16--Plenty of suitors are lining up for Prodigy, the ugly duckling of online services.

With IBM and Sears reportedly interested in selling Prodigy, phone companies, software and media firms and even other online services are eyeing buying a stake in the Westchester-based service, sources said yesterday.

AT&T, CompuServe and a joint venture of News Corp. and MCI are among the leading candidates to take a look at the service. Even such giant media companies as Disney, Viacom and Time Warner may kick the tires on Prodigy, sources said.

Once the nation's premier online service, Prodigy -- which was founded in 1984 -- is a distant third behind America Online (AOL) and CompuServe. Its subscriber base has stagnated at 1.6 million households --...
