Virginia Funeral Home Retreats after Charging Extra for AIDS Cases.(Originated from Daily Press, Newport News, Va.)

Jan. 19--A Portsmouth funeral home that charged $2,700 extra for embalming nine AIDS victims has agreed to reimburse their families for the charges.

Under an agreement reached Thursday with the U.S. Justice Department, Fisher Funeral Home also promised to pay damages to the families and to initiate a company policy against HIV/AIDS-related discrimination.

The settlement is the first of its kind involving the Americans With Disabilities Act and funeral home discrimination against AIDS victims, Justice Department spokeswoman Lee Douglas said.

Fisher admitted no wrongdoing, but by charging $300 extra to embalm each of the AIDS victims, the funeral home violated the disabilities act, Justice Department officials said in a press release. Title III of the...
