US West Reports Reduced Backlog of Utahns Waiting for New Telephones.(Originated from The Salt Lake Tribune)

Jan. 30--The phone company announced Monday its $115 million investment in growth has paid off. US West Communications Co. said it has brought in line the number of customers waiting for new phones.
The company's year-end statistics come as good news to customers, who complained in record numbers last year about the long time they had to wait for a new phone service. It also eased pressure on state regulators, who had become so exasperated with the phone company that they threatened penalties for the service delays.
The company said it was happy to pare the backlog, after spending more than ever before on improvements, tackling 250 new projects and beefing up its payroll with 100 new hires. At the same time, the company benefited from a streamlined...
