Jan. 30--Smith's Food & Drug Centers Inc.'s chief executive officer Jeff Smith plans to step away from day-to-day management of the company and head for the golf course.

The Salt Lake City-based grocery chain, founded by legendary grocer Dee Smith, no longer will have a Smith family member directing daily operations after midyear.

The 46-year-old Smith's exit from the management scene at the regional chain is part of a sweeping company restructuring.

It includes a planned major acquisition in Arizona that positions it as the top supermarket chain in the Phoenix area and a reorganization of the company's board and a new president and chief operating officer.
