Jan. 4--Christel and Dick Brooks are giving up the corporate world.

If all goes well, by this summer he'll be putting 40 acres in rural Ohio under raspberries and she'll be getting recertified as a French teacher.

"It's like standing on the diving board and getting ready to jump in while you are still filling the pool," Christel Brooks said.

They are among 40,000 people who won't be working at AT&T after the company reduces its work force in the months ahead.

The leaner AT&T will be divided into three companies.

Shareholders are cheering.

In the meantime, workers who were unwilling to jump are waiting for a round of mandatory cuts.
