Agriculture Dept. Expects Burley Tobacco Quota to Increase 15.4 Percent.(Originated from Lexington Herald-Leader, Ky.)

LEXINGTON, Ky.--Feb. 2--The actual burley tobacco quota will increase 15.4 percent his year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said yesterday.

The basic quota will be 633.8 million pounds, up from 549 million in 1995, the department said.

Those numbers differ from figures released Wednesday by Sen. Wendell Ford, D-Ky.

Ford's office put the quota at 723.8 million pounds.

Ford spokesman Mark Day said yesterday that is the effective quota -- the basic quota plus an amount of burley unmarketed last year.

The quota is the total number of pounds burley growers may sell during the crop season.

Ford's office had said the percentage increase was 16 percent, not 15.4.
