computer chip factory would disrupt frogs, birds and plants as well as human neighbors, several Eugene residents told a hearings official Thursday night.

But a Hyundai lawyer said the company will lose millions of dollars -- and local residents will have to wait longer for factory jobs -- if the firm isn't allowed to build its facility during both day and night hours.

At issue is a city-granted noise variance that lets Hyundai operate bulldozers, backhoes and other equipment at night, overriding a city law that bans noisy work between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. Fifteen people appealed the variance.
