Cellular Telephone Company Sets Up in Tampa Bay, Fla., Area.(Originated from St. Petersburg Times, Fla.)

Feb. 28--Hold the phone. Another cellular telephone service has landed in Tampa Bay.
American Portable Telecom, a subsidiary of Chicago-based Telephone and Data Systems Inc., said Tuesday that it has opened an office in Tampa as the first step toward offering "personal communications services" to the area early next year.
PCS networks transmit higher radio frequencies that cellular phones, but are otherwise similar systems.
The company has nearly 100 employees and consultants in the area assembling a communications network to support wireless PCS services. American Portable said it plans to offer cellularlike phone services that include two-way text messaging and a "smart card" that can store personal subscriber information on a removable plastic...
