Computer Industry Competition Means More Choice for Less Money.(Originated from San Jose Mercury News, Calif.)

Mar. 5--The turmoil in the computer industry should guarantee one thing this year: Consumers can expect more choices, lower prices and better technology.

Amid competitive pressures from video games and network computers, traditional PC makers have started the year off with a slowdown in growth, though there remains debate about how much of a slowdown. Various computer component makers, such as Cirrus Logic Inc., have warned that business isn't growing like they initially anticipated. And when computer makers get nervous about revenues, they start cutting prices.

Some wonder whether the U.S. market for PCs has become saturated and there won't be enough new features in spring models to entice people to upgrade from old machines. Others argue the dip in demand...
