Southwestern Bell to Oppose AT&T Bid for Texas Local Telephone Service.(Originated from Austin American-Statesman, Texas)

Mar. 1--AT&T, the nation's largest telephone company, challenged Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. on Thursday in seeking to provide local telephone service in Texas and four other states.

Southwestern Bell will oppose AT&T's applications before the Public Utility Commission, and the loser there likely will take the case to the Federal Communications Commission or the courts.

Vaughn Aldredge, an AT&T spokesman, said the company hoped to offer local service "by the end of the year."
