Retailers Take Note as Best Buy Arrives in Tampa Bay, Fla., Area.(Originated from St. Petersburg Times, Fla.)

ST. PETE BEACH, Fla.--Mar. 6--Best Buy Co. Inc. makes its landfall in the Tampa Bay area this autumn with three huge consumer electronics stores and a fourth to come later.

But instead of a retail bloodbath among a few fiercely competitive consumer electronics chains like Circuit City, Sound Advice, Montgomery Ward's and others, the arrival of this new player probably will cause a lot of bleeding all over the broader marketplace.

If Best Buy does as well here as it has elsewhere, about $200 million in annual sales will come out of the hides of a multiplicity of retailers.

The company has signed leases for a 52,000-square-foot former Kash n' Karry on N Dale Mabry Highway just north of Interstate 275 in Tampa and a 45,000-square-foot store in Regency...
