Home Depot to Open Second Store in Southfield, Mich.(Originated from Detroit Free Press)

Mar. 13--Home Depot, the chain that analysts invented the term "category killer" to describe, will open its 15th Michigan store on Thursday near Northland Center.

The new Southfield store, at 16400 W. Eight Mile, is in a more commercial and industrial area than other Detroit-area Home Depots. It is expected to gross about $35 million in sales during its first year, according to Jim Joyner, store manager.

The 130,000-square-foot store will include a greenhouse and garden center and will employ 170 people. The store is expected to generate $2.3 million a year in sales taxes and property taxes, according to the company.

Home Depot is the nation's largest home improvement retailer, with sales of $15.4 billion in 1995.
