Dallas Retailers Brace for Competition from New Nordstrom Store.(Originated from The Dallas Morning News)

CHICAGO--Linda Swanson, manager of the Marshall Field's department store at suburban Oakbrook Center, dusted off a thick ring binder last summer and shipped it to her company's store in the Dallas Galleria.

To most people, the book of notes, event schedules, reports, advertising copy and other documents from five and six years ago would seem meaningless. But for Ms. Swanson, it chronicles one of her biggest business challenges: competing with Nordstrom Inc. when that high flying Seattle retailer chose Oakbrook shopping center for its first foray into the Midwest in 1991.

The gesture to her Texas colleagues was the least she could do, she says.
