Court Ruling, Resignation Deal Blow to Massachusetts Gaming Proponents.(Originated from The Boston Globe)

Mar. 28--Massachusetts casino proponents -- especially leaders of the Wampanoag Tribe -- suffered a double blow yesterday.

First, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that tribes cannot sue state governments in federal court in disputes over Indian gambling laws.

Then, House Speaker Charles Flaherty -- who had promised to bring the Wampanoags' casino plan to a vote by the end of July -- announced he will step down from his post on June 30.

Flaherty's move left sources on both sides of the controversial gambling issue speculating about their chances under whoever succeeds him.
