Mar. 29--Cellular phone wholesaler Brightpoint Inc. has rung up its first big deal to deliver cellular phones to mass merchandisers, including Kmart and Target Stores.
The Northwest-side company will provide the phones on behalf of U.S. Communications Inc., which contracts with the stores. The list of retailers also includes Lowes, Meijer, Montgomery Ward, OfficeMax, Service Merchandise, and television shopping company QVC.
Brightpoint usually supplies phones to cellular service providers, not retail chains.
"This will be our first significant entree into distributing cellular products to mass merchandisers," said J. Mark Howell, executive vice president of Brightpoint, which posted sales last year of $269.4 million.
