Long Beach Civic Light Opera in California Closes Its Doors.(Originated from Press-Telegram, Long Beach, Calif.)

LONG BEACH, Calif.--Apr. 18--The nationally recognized Long Beach Civic Light Opera, which for nearly half a century graced the Southern California stage with top Broadway musicals, is lowering the curtain for the final time.

Meeting with reporters Wednesday morning, saddened LBCLO officials sitting under a clock that had stopped running said the board of directors reached a unanimous decision to close the company a day earlier.

The officials said they were unable to generate enough support to lead the company out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The most telling example is their inability to sell tickets for "The Best of Broadway" fund-raising concerts that were scheduled to begin early next month.
