Detroit Newspapers Dispute Strikers' Claim of Circulation Plunge.(Originated from Detroit Free Press)

May 2--Striking newspaper workers who have tried to encourage reader and advertiser boycotts of the Free Press and Detroit News said Wednesday that newspaper circulation has tumbled more than 50 percent since the strike started, but company officials said the unions' claims are "absurd."
The unions, which represent 2,000 workers on strike since July, say they relied on leaked company documents to estimate the combined daily circulation of the newspapers at 409,000. The papers had a combined pre-strike daily circulation of 863,919.
The unions' claims are "absurd to the point of being ridiculous," said Detroit Newspapers spokesperson Susie Ellwood. Detroit Newspapers handles business operations for the two papers.
