TACOMA, Wash.--May 21--Talk about a slam.
Five major players in the computer industry -- IBM, Apple, Netscape, Oracle and Sun Microsystems -- gathered in San Francisco Monday to announce standards for Oracle's new network computer, a scaled down and cheaper computer that allows easy access to the Internet.
The standards are technical and complex, and of interest mainly to those who write software and build hardware for the network computers. The companies called the news conference to announce the standards and promote the network computer as the next generation of computing.
But the glitzy event quickly turned into a Microsoft bashing contest. While dozens of other computer companies endorsed the standards, Microsoft refused.
