Oracle Corp. Builds Following for Network Computer.(Originated from San Jose Mercury News, Calif.)

May 21--Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle Corp., finally showed the world Monday he is not alone in pursuing the vision of a $500 "network computer" that would perform most of its tasks through the Internet.
Ellison enticed top executives from four other companies -- Apple Computer Inc., International Business Machines Corp., Netscape Communications Corp. and Sun Microsystems Inc. -- to share the stage with him and help spread the gospel during a carefully choreographed news conference at the Westin St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco.
The five companies together proclaimed technical guidelines for the network computer, or NC, and promised the first NCs would hit the market before year-end.
