Sun Microsystems Giving Computer Industry a Jolt of Java.(Originated from San Jose Mercury News, Calif.)

Jun. 3--Sun Microsystems Inc. has given the computer industry a huge jolt of caffeine with its Java programming language.

All the symptoms are there: frenetic activity accompanied by a vaguely grounded feeling of elation mixed with a certain nervousness.

Silicon Valley is nearly drowning in coffee metaphors, as Sun pushes Java-related projects called Hot Java and Java Beans, while other companies launch new products with names such as Arabica, Barista, Cafe and Latte.

The caffeine buzz hit a new high last week at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, where Sun held its first conference for Java software developers, appropriately called Java One, and drew a sell-out crowd of 5,500.

In contrast, Mountain View-based Sun unveiled Java in May 1995...
