University of California Extension to Lead Farm Tour to Study Organic Waste.(Originated from The Bakersfield Californian)

Jun. 8--The University of California Cooperative Extension will lead an all-day, Organic Matter Amendment Tour to area farms on Wednesday, June 19, to study the use of sewer sludge, green waste and manure composting on farmland. The field trip also is sponsored by local suppliers and the California Integrated Waste Management Board.

The state has required counties to decrease landfill inputs by 50 percent of 1990 levels by 2000. Cities and waste handlers have turned to agricultural lands as a means of spreading organic and mineral materials that have value for crops, primarily green waste, sewage sludge and, to a lesser extent, cogeneration flyash, said Blake Sanden, the farm adviser for irrigation management and agronomy.
