Voters in Moreno Valley and Loma Linda, Calif., Reject Municipal Taxes.(Originated from The Business Press, Ontario, Calif.)

Jun. 10--Voters in Moreno Valley and Loma Linda last week defeated measures that officials in both cities had hoped would solve some of their financial problems -- and which would have left in place higher levies on business.

The ballot measures would have permitted the cities to continue collecting utility taxes and business license fees that were ruled unconstitutional last year by the California Supreme Court.

In Moreno Valley, where a utility tax and business licenses provide about $8.3 million, or 25 percent, of the city's $33 million general fund budget, voters rejected the city's utility tax by a vote of 4,857 to 4,535. Voters also defeated the city's business license fees by a margin of 4,801 to 4,573.
