Analysts Credit WestAir Airlines Improvements with Helping Mesa Air Group.(Originated from The Fresno Bee, Calif.)

Jun. 14--Analysts see a rosy financial outlook for Mesa Air Group and attribute some of it to improvement at WestAir Airlines.

Mesa bought Fresno-based WestAir in 1992, saving it from a nearly certain trip to bankruptcy court.

After slashing costs, Mesa returned WestAir to profitability, only to have it sink back into the red last year under pressure from rivals Shuttle by United and Southwest Airlines.

So, Mesa went back to work, cut costs, plugged leaks and got back into the black.

"We've been profitable for several months," said Mesa's chief executive officer, Larry Risley. He said California remains competitive and hinted that he's still not happy with WestAir's contribution to the balance sheet.
