Workers Accuse Borders Books & Music Workers of Firing Union Supporter.(Originated from Philadelphia Daily News)

Jun. 28--Miriam Fried, a former salesclerk at Borders, was "a fine role model for other booksellers with her work ethic and book knowledge."
That's according to a performance review dated March 7 and signed by Dave Stewart, manager of the Center City store. Three months later, Fried was fired after an argument with him over the store's check-cashing policy.
She, and some employees still working at Borders, are convinced that her dismissal was not motivated by the check-cashing policy, but by her vocal support of an organizing effort by the Industrial Workers of the World. It was narrowly defeated last spring.
