Dam Project Spells Dollars for Hemet, Calif., Region.(Originated from The Press-Enterprise, Riverside, Calif.)

HEMET, Calif.--Jul. 18--It could be a hot, dusty job, but it's not like that in the cab of one of the gargantuan trucks moving dirt in the largest dam building project in Southern California history.

Instead, it's air conditioned. And the closed windows keep out the dust as 35-year-old Bobby Espudo drives to the bottom of the pit where a huge excavator uses just three scoops to put 92 tons of earth onto the back of the truck.

Up, out of the pit on a two-lane road wider than Interstate 215 a few miles away, Espudo drives atop a two-week-old hill that's already 50 feet high and dumps the dirt. Then it's back down again.

Over and over, through the night and into the early morning, Espudo and other truck drivers go to the bottom of the pit around 70 times...
