Livermore, Calif., Lab's Effort May Ease Computer Chip Making.(Originated from Contra Costa Times, Walnut Creek, Calif.)

LIVERMORE, Calif.--Jul. 24--Silicon Valley leaders said Tuesday they believe a group of East Bay scientists have produced big breakthroughs that can turn commonplace desktop computers into super computers.

Executives with Intel Corp. and others in the business of computer chips are optimistic about discoveries at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory.

"They have made very significant progress," said Jim Glaze, vice president of technology at the Semiconductor Industry Association. "This is a very important discovery."

The lab's research will make it much easier to use ultraviolet light to make computer chips through a process called lithography. This procedure is a way to mass-produce images or patterns that can be placed on silicon wafers that hold...
