Aug. 13--California City has aspired to become many things to many people over the years -- a quiet bedroom community for commuters from Lancaster and Los Angeles; a source of employees for a proposed prison; a resort oasis in the Mojave Desert to rival Las Vegas.

And now, City Manager Steve West envisions California City as the nation's first space-age suburb.

About half an hour's drive to the south of this desert haven, engineers at Edwards Air Force Base are preparing to test a prototype space vehicle which will prove the technology for the next generation of orbital craft to replace the space shuttle.
