Seattle-Tacoma Area Inflation Trails U.S. Rate for First Half of Year.(Originated from The News Tribune, Tacoma, Wash.)

TACOMA, Wash.--Aug. 14--Consumer prices in the Seattle-Tacoma area climbed 1.5 percent in the first six months of this year -- the first time in at least three years that the local rate of inflation has fallen below the national rate.

Nationwide, the CPI was up 2 percent during the same six-month period.

Higher housing costs were the largest contributor to the increase in the Puget Sound area's consumer price index, said Lois Orr, interim regional commissioner of the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Rising food and transportation costs also contributed to the 1.5 percent increase in Seattle and Tacoma.
