Thomson Chain Buys Mesa Tribune, Yuma, Ariz., Newspapers.(Originated from The Arizona Republic/Phoenix Gazette)

Aug. 21--Times are changing at Thomson Newspapers, which announced Tuesday that it is acquiring the Mesa Tribune and five other Cox newspapers in Arizona.

A few years ago, word that Thomson was taking over a newspaper would have sent workers running to dust off their resumes and some readers searching for an alternative.

The Toronto-based chain had a reputation for squeezing every penny of profit from its collection of mostly small, and largely low-quality, papers.

But the Thomson that plans to acquire the six Cox newspapers in Arizona for an undisclosed price is a much different company than it was even three years ago, according to Dick Harrington, president and chief executive of Thomson Newspapers.
