IBM Wants Businesses to Bypass Personal Computers, Opt for "Network Computer".(Originated from Saint Paul Pioneer Press, Minn.)

Sep. 6--IBM unveiled its first "network computer" Thursday, a $700 stripped-down machine it claims can match the muscle of the most powerful desktop personal computers -- while slashing the cost of managing and upgrading computer systems.
"It costs less than a PC to purchase," says Bruce Anthony, a senior technical staffer who helped develop the new computer. "But the bigger factor is the cost of ownership. We believe we can cut the cost of ownership by 50 to 70 percent over traditional PC server systems."
Developed in Rochester and dubbed the IBM Network Station, the device is slightly smaller than a notebook computer and weighs 21/2 pounds.
